Boca de Aqua
Bacalar | MexicoIn the splendid Yucatán region of Mexico, travelers may find it challenging to make a wrong choice, yet Bacalar stands out as a hidden gem, embodying a model of responsible tourism in the country.
A Pinnacle of Responsible Tourism in Mexico’s Yucatán, Balancing Nature and Luxury
In the heart of Mexico’s awe-inspiring Yucatán region lies the undiscovered treasure of Bacalar, an unassuming yet extraordinary destination that beckons travelers to experience responsible tourism at its finest.
Surrounded by the natural splendors of Quintana Roo, just north of the Belize border, Bacalar emerges as a beacon of sustainability, setting a precedent for mindful exploration in this diverse and culturally rich country.
Bacalar owes its pristine allure not only to its stunning locale but also to the unwavering commitment of its local community. A formidable guardian of nature, the community is dedicated to preserving Bacalar’s breathtaking wonders, notably the 26-mile-long lagoon that graces the landscape. This commitment to conservation has fostered a unique environment where responsible tourism thrives, providing a blueprint for other emerging destinations.
At the forefront of this sustainable development is Rodrigo Juárez, an eco-conscious hotelier hailing from Mexico City. Recognizing the need for responsible hospitality, Juárez spearheaded the creation of Boca de Agua, a visionary resort designed by acclaimed architect Frida Escobedo. This recent addition to Bacalar’s offerings seamlessly blends luxury with environmental consciousness.
We believe the traditional model for tourism in emerging destinations must change. Regenerative hospitality does not have to be uncomfortable or ugly. Regenerative hospitality is valued by travelers, and therefore, projects like ours can become self-sustaining ventures.
Boca de Agua, constructed primarily with locally sourced materials, stands as a testament to regenerative hospitality. The resort is a harmonious retreat, featuring a family of treehouses delicately immersed in lush foliage, their foundations lifted on pillars to minimize soil impact. Notably, a staggering 90% of the resort’s 82 acres remains intentionally untouched, allowing the natural ecosystem to flourish undisturbed.
Beyond the 22 thoughtfully designed rooms, Boca de Agua invites guests to immerse themselves in a world where luxury coexists with nature. Two restaurants, one boasting a stargazing platform, provide culinary delights against the backdrop of the lagoon. A lagoon deck, a cenote pool, and a spa cocooned by four regal red Chaka trees complete the immersive experience, offering a holistic retreat for mindful travelers.
Boca de Agua
Bacalar unfolds as more than just a destination, it is a testament to the transformative power of responsible tourism. Here, the journey transcends ordinary travel, inviting explorers to tread lightly, leave positive imprints, and witness the harmonious coexistence of human luxury and untouched nature in this hidden gem of the Yucatán.
